Feed additives are essential for the health and well being of animals like cattle, pigs, goat etc. It has become increasingly important with new diseases and infections coming around that animals are given the right kind of nutrition which not only benefits them but also protects them from infections and gives the owner the best output or profit. Meat consumption has increased tremendously in in the recent days and it is important that not only do the animals produced give the best output but the people who are consuming them also don’t have any negative impact. Opposite trends like veganism, vegetarianism, pescetarianism are some of the things that can hamper the growth to the industry. Animal rights activists have condemned the way animals are kept, breeded and slaughtered in the industry. They have even launched a movement to stop this. Governments in India have also implemented a beef ban in some states. Many organizations like PETA are actively promoting not just stopping the consumption of animals but also to not use them for any other purposes like for creating wool and clothing, usage of leather in car seats, also usage in research as guinea pigs. etc

Companies have to be responsible while producing their products because a lot of lives are at stake.  Another essential benefit of additives is rapid growth. Time is extremely essential not just in the livestock industry but in all fields of work and additives provide this benefit of growing the animal into considerable size in the right time. Antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents are used to achieve this purpose. Coccidiostats are used to prevent coccidio in animals. Another important function of additives is to maintain and preserve freshness since a lot of spoilage can be caused by mold, air, fungi etc. Not just preserving freshness they also help in controlling mixing of harmful elements which can cause severe diseases if consumed. Food additives help in controlling the acidity and alkalinity of foods, while other ingredients help in maintaining the taste and appeal of foods by reducing the fat content.

Direct food additives are those that are added to a food for a specific purpose in that food. For example, xanthan gum -- used in salad dressings, chocolate milk, bakery fillings, puddings and other foods to add texture -- is a direct additive. Most direct additives are identified on the ingredient label of foods. Indirect food additives are those that become part of the food in trace amounts due to its packaging, storage or other handling. For instance, minute amounts of packaging substances may find their way into foods during storage. Food packaging manufacturers must prove to the concerned government authorities that all materials coming in contact with food are safe before they are permitted for use.
